Viennese Iced Coffee

Mary

The Challenge

This week's recipes (actually last week's recipes...we're catching up!) included the Jambalaya and this delicious Viennese Iced Coffee, which you can find here or on page 254 of Foolproof.

Mary's Take:

Y'all, when are we going to be able to get together with our peeps without worrying? I'm tired of the dampandemic, as I know everyone is [Lea: Word.]. I'm tired of feeling torn between doing what's part of the core of my personality (having people over and feeding them) and staying away from everyone (and not getting scolded by my mother...sorry, Mommy, I know you just want us to stay safe).

Take this simple iced coffee, for instance. It's the kind of thing you want to make and serve to guests. We don't go out of our way to have dessert for just the 2 of us. Sure, we can throw a scoop of ice cream in a bowl, but it's nothing special or interesting.

So, when our friend the realtor and his lovely wife were stopping by on a Sunday afternoon to discuss a property we were considering, I jumped at the chance to make this for them. And visit. Socially distanced, of course.

It's so easy: brew 6 shots of espresso and add them to the blender with sugar, vanilla, and hot water. Drop in the ice and blend until smooth.

Pour it into glasses and add the ice cream. We used coffee ice cream (Häagen-Dazs makes the best) and I popped a few chocolate-covered espresso beans on top (which didn't make it into the picture because I forgot about them until John reminded me. So much for the perfect hostess I dream of being.).

Lea's Take:

This was totally a case of what we call "me not paying attention to the schedule." I thought we only had one recipe this week (which I did, I might add!). But then Mary reminded me on Sunday that there was this ice cream thing. I, of course, had none of the ingredients, but she said I could come over Monday to make it for her (isn't she sweet?) [Mary: I thought that would be easier than her going out and buying an espresso machine...and I wanted to have it again. Everyone wins!]. But, well, then I had to cancel and she ended up coming over to my house on Tuesday instead (not with the ingredients) and... by then, I had already moved onto the next week's recipe.

And there you go. But, it sounded delish. Make it.

The Verdict

While you could surely make this in the evening using decaf espresso, I think a Sunday afternoon was a perfect time to serve it. It was refreshing and had a nice kick from the espresso. Our friend's review: "It's the perfect balance of sweet & coffee flavor."

And after another sip, "Ooh, is that good."

Make this, and soon.

And hang on, kids, getting together with our friends and family without concern is, hopefully, just around the corner.
